What is an EEG?

An Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a safe and painless diagnostic test used to measure the electrical activity of the brain. It helps detect abnormalities in brain wave patterns that may be linked to various neurological conditions.

During the procedure, small metal electrodes connected by thin wires are placed on your scalp. These electrodes pick up tiny electrical signals produced by brain cell activity. The results are displayed as waveforms on a computer screen or printed for analysis by our neurology specialists.

EEGs can also include evoked potential studies, which assess how your brain responds to visual, auditory, or tactile stimuli.

Why Might You Need an EEG?

Your doctor may recommend an EEG to diagnose or monitor conditions such as:

  • Epilepsy or seizure disorders

  • Brain tumors, stroke, or lesions

  • Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia

  • Psychiatric conditions such as certain psychoses

  • Sleep disorders including narcolepsy

  • Brain trauma or the effects of drug intoxication

  • Monitoring during surgeries involving the brain or neck

It may also assist in assessing brain function in critically ill patients or determining brain death.

Is the EEG Safe?

Yes. EEGs have been safely used for decades and do not cause any discomfort. The electrodes simply record brain activity — they do not emit any electrical currents.

In rare cases, individuals with epilepsy may experience a seizure due to flashing lights or deep breathing exercises during the test. If this happens, our trained medical team will respond immediately.

Preparing for Your EEG at Ruby Hospital

To ensure accurate results, please follow these guidelines:

  • Wash your hair the night before. Avoid conditioners, gels, or sprays.

  • Do not consume caffeine (coffee, tea, soda, or energy drinks) for at least 8–12 hours before the test.

  • Follow any sleep restrictions if advised (some tests require you to be drowsy or asleep).

  • Avoid fasting, as low blood sugar can affect the results.

  • Inform your doctor of any medications or supplements you’re taking. Some may need to be paused before the test.

What to Expect During the EEG

  • You’ll be comfortably seated or lying down in a quiet room.

  • 16 to 25 electrodes will be applied to your scalp with a conductive paste, or a cap may be used.

  • You’ll be asked to stay still and relaxed while brain activity is recorded.

  • In some cases, you may be exposed to visual or breathing stimuli to activate specific brain responses.

  • The procedure typically lasts between 45 minutes and 2 hours.

  • For certain conditions, sleep EEGs or 24-hour monitoring may be recommended. We also offer ambulatory EEG options for home-based monitoring.

After the EEG

Once the test is complete:

  • The electrodes will be removed, and any residue cleaned off.

  • If sedatives were used, you’ll need someone to accompany you home.

  • Mild skin irritation at electrode sites may occur but typically fades quickly.

  • Your doctor will advise you on resuming any paused medications.

Our neurology team will review the results and discuss the next steps in your care.
