The most crucial aspects are that you halt smoking, present a list of all prescribed and over-the-counter drugs, and arrange for someone responsible for your care to drive you home or accompany you on public transportation after your surgery.

Eat or drink nothing for two hours before operation. Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours prior. 

Make no marks on your skin to indicate the surgical site.

Confirm with your insurance company that all necessary paperwork has been completed prior to admission, and be sure to keep your insurance and prescription medicine cards on hand at all times.
